Pam brings a unique blend of experience and passion to her role as the House Director at Florida State University. Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, this Midwesterner has a background in seminary and bible school, having spent years as a pastor and pioneering two churches in the Pacific Northwest before her 22-year house director career. Pam developed friendships with house directors from her church and when she decided to retire from active ministry, she felt called back to the college campus!
How did you become a house director? And why Tri Delta?
“I wanted to get back to the vibrant energy of a college campus and be part of that dynamic environment, I served as a House Director at another sorority at Florida State from 2009 to 2019. In 2019, I decided to do something different and left Tallahassee, to become a long-term substitute house director. I spent time at the University of Colorado and the University of Iowa, but when COVID hit, everything shut down.
I went to Boston to be with family, but I missed my friends, Tallahassee, and the campus atmosphere. Then, a friend called and mentioned that Tri Delta had an opening. Coincidentally, my grandson wanted to attend Florida State, so when he came to campus, I did too. It turned out to be a fantastic decision—I’ve had a wonderful time reconnecting with friends, my grandson, the campus, and, of course, Tri Delta, which is such an amazing organization.”
How do you find work-life balance?
“I find balance in the little things. My mini dachshund, Cooper, keeps me company—he’s 7 pounds of pure joy! I have great friends on campus, and my church community is a big part of my life. When things quiet down at the house, I take a moment and have some time to myself.
What do you love about being a house director?
“I love everything about it. It sounds simplistic but it’s true. Working at Tri Delta goes above and beyond what most house directors experience—we’re so well-supported and truly feel loved and valued in our roles and in our homes. With this kind of support, even when things get difficult (which every job does at times) it never feels like a burden and you never feel alone, It’s so rewarding to make the chapter house a home and a place the women can find safety, comfort, unwind, be themselves and find unconditional love.”
What does a typical day look like for you?
“Every day is different and that’s what I love about it. It’s part administrative, part property management, part human resources and everything in between. But the most important thing is being there and being available to everyone –from the collegiate women, the kitchen staff, vendors and House Corp so when something arises, you’re on top of it!”
How has being a house director contributed to your growth and development personally and professionally?
Professionally, the training and development Tri Delta offers their house directors is so beneficial. I always learn something valuable and I enjoy the challenge of being stretched in new directions. The way this organization is structured makes it a wonderful place to work.
Personally, I’ve become a better person by working with these incredible women. I love making plans, checking boxes, and getting things done, but I’ve also learned to be a better listener, to slow down, and to realize that perfection isn’t the goal—it’s about helping them achieve their vision. Over the past 22 years, I’ve learned that even if things don’t always go as planned, it’s about supporting these women in accomplishing their goals.”
Advice?
“My advice for a new House Director is to take it slow and be yourself. Whether the house was in a good place or had challenges before you arrived, start by observing, listening, and letting things settle. Don’t rush to make big changes. At Tri Delta, you don’t have to fit a mold. Bring your personality, perspective and unique experiences to the job. And likewise, appreciate the different perspectives everybody else brings. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else, and just enjoy the ride!”
